About us

Casa de Santa Isabel, in Seia, is a therapeutic community founded in 1981 that supports young people and adults with special abilities. Focused on the development of each individual, it offers occupational, cultural and sporting activities. Sustainability is a priority, with practices such as organic farming and recycling.

The essence

Casa de Santa Isabel is a therapeutic community for teenagers and adults with special needs. We want and seek to form a community that provides each person, whether user or collaborator, with the possibility of self-development, healing and realizing their potential.

What guides us can be represented in a Metaphor: an excellent musician with a damaged instrument cannot make harmonious music sound, but it would be tragic to conclude that the musician has no quality. We must go in search of the musician, because we recognize that in each human being resides a nucleus of spiritual order, whose essence is pure and healthy.

The community impulse

We are guided by a community impulse and by the social, cultural and economic principles of Anthroposophy inspired by Rudolf Steiner, doctor of philosophy (1861-1925), a worldview that encompasses the spiritual understanding of the human being and the universe.

‘In a community of people working together, the welfare of the community is greater the less the individual worker claims for himself the gains from his labor and the more of these gains are handed over to his peers. In turn he will allow his own needs to find a response in the work carried out by others’

The name of Santa Casa Isabel

The name of Queen Saint Elizabeth was chosen for our community. She was known for her love and compassion for the poor and needy. It was Queen Saint Isabel who introduced the cult of the Holy Spirit in Portugal, which later led to the great maritime discoveries of the Portuguese, in the 15th and 16th centuries.

Objectives

The aim of Casa de Santa Isabel is to create a living, working and learning community for children, teenagers and adults with special needs and their employees.
